With heavy hearts but joyful memories, we announce the passing of Russell Lee Sonnier Sr., who entered eternal rest on May 17, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on February 11, 1930, in Jennings, Louisiana, Russell lived a life filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished moments.
Russell proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, demonstrating the dedication and resilience that would define him throughout his life. After his service, he lived and worked in the oil and gas industry as a tool pusher, where he displayed a strong work ethic and passion for his craft.
An avid fisherman and gardener, Russell found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was often found casting a line by the water's edge or tending to his beloved garden, where he nurtured not just plants but also beautiful moments with family and friends.
Russell's greatest joy, however, came from his family. He is survived by his children, Troy (Shelly) Sonnier, Russell (Mary Jude) Sonnier Jr., Byron Sonnier, John (Connie) Sonnier, Cynthia (Joey) Daigre, Renee (Anthony) Trauth, Kevin (Janet) Seagraves, Kip Seagraves and Kara (Darrell) Whitehouse; daughter-in-law, Renell Sonnier; 23 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. He embraced every gathering, always ready with a smile, a story, and an embrace for those he loved. His legacy of love and unity will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday May 21, 2025, in the Miguez Funeral Home Chapel, beginning at 3:30 p.m. and continue until 9:00 p.m. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday May 22, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. until the time of services at 10:00 a.m. with Father Roland Vaughn officiating.
He will be laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral Home.
As we remember Russell, let us carry forward his spirit of love and togetherness.
Russell was preceded in death by: his first wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Sonnier; his second wife, Joella Seagraves Sonnier; his parents, Dionell Sonnier and Lorena Sonnier; his brother, Uda Roy "Bido" Sonnier, sister in law, Betty Jean; son, Ronnie Sonnier and his special friend Maria Sonnier.
