Donald Ray Patterson, 75, of Elton, Louisiana, passed away Tuesday, May 27, 2025 in Christus St. Patrick Hospital (Lake Charles, LA). He was born January 3, 1950 in Atkins, Arkansas, son of Leland and Rosie Patterson.
Don joined the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 17 and served in Vietnam as a radio operator with the 2nd Battalion, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. He ate steak every year on the Marine Corps birthday, November 10th, in honor of his time in the service of our country.
In 1979, Don married Trudy Jenkins of Elton where he continued to work in the lumber/hardware business managing Jenkins’ Lumber Yard until 1991. He worked as a poker dealer with the Coushatta Casino and later a bail bondsman with his son, Jon Patterson, until his retirement. Don was elected and served on the Elton City Council for two terms. He was a member of the 40 and 8 and was a lifetime member of the American Legion with over 45 years of service.
Don loved to tell stories (both true and exaggerated) to bring smiles and laughter to those around him. He was quick-witted, foul mouthed, and a true legend by the standards of those who knew him well. He loved to go to his deer camp and spent much time sitting around the campfire with his hunting buddies telling stories and cooking. In Elton, he often enjoyed fried shrimp poboys, and he was known for cooking a good gumbo, barbequed pork steaks, and meatball stew with biscuits. Black Velvet and a pack of cigarettes was always within reach.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Leland and Rosie Patterson; and two brothers, Ronnie and Bobby Patterson all of Arkansas.
He is survived by his wife, Trudy; two sons, Jon Patterson (Diana) of Belleville, AR, and Daniel Patterson of Elton, LA; a daughter, Abby Patterson Guillory (Kennan) and a grandson, Charles Guillory all of Tulsa, OK; and one sister, Sandra Evans (David) of Buttermilk, AR. His memory lives on in many other beloved family members and friends.
The family has chosen to honor Don's wishes of cremation. The family will have a private ceremony at a future date.
