Don Chaisson

Funeral services for Mr. Don E. Chaisson, 75, will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10,

2018, at Jennings United Methodist Church in Jennings, La. with Rev. Susan Ferguson

officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Miguez Funeral

Home of Jennings. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Saturday, June 9, and again

on Sunday, June 10, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at 2:00 p.m.

Mr. Chaisson passed away at 10:17 a.m. June 2 at Our Lady of Lourdes in Lafayette after battling

a cancer-related illness. He has gone on to meet our Heavenly Father and reunite with his son

and also his wife of almost 50 years.

He began his young life in the military, serving his country in the U.S. Navy. After returning

home, he settled into marriage with the love of his life, Cheryl Jo. His devotion, loyalty, and

love for her was so very pure and rare.

During his life he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, a love passed on

to his children and grandchildren. Toledo Bend was his favorite. He was also a history buff and

enjoyed searching for “treasures,” including antique bottles of all kinds, some dating back to the

1800s. He had a passion for discovering other treasures from history and turning them into

beautifully-crafted displays of art.

Other hobbies included things like building and painting birdhouses, to handcrafting knives,

sharpening and polishing them until they were perfect. He also had a passion for gardening and

tending to his outdoor patio, which he built himself, brick by brick, until he was completely

satisfied with its design. He filled it with beautiful flowers, plants, succulents, and even bonsai

trees. Here he could sit and escape the stressors of life by grabbing his favorite book and reading

the day away.

Not only will Mr. Chaisson be remembered most for his love and devotion to his wife, but also

as a dedicated and number 1 sports fan of his children and grandchildren – attending hundreds

and hundreds of their ball games for well over 40 years – from softball and baseball, to football

and even lacrosse. He could always be found sitting in the bleachers or standing at the fence

line showing his support, rarely missing a game.

He was a hard-working man, retiring from PPG Industries in Lake Charles, La. as a welder and

pipefitter. After first losing his son, he then lost his wife, but remained close with her best

friends who were angels at a time when he most needed their support. He continued caring for

and raising his youngest grandson, Kaleb, until he saw him off to college.

The love and devotion to his grandchildren will be dearly missed, especially by those to whom

he was more a father than a grandfather. He was loved and deeply respected by his son-in-law,

and will also be profoundly missed by his daughter, a “daddy’s girl” who considers him her first

love. He will forever remain a hero in her heart.

Mr. Chaisson also leaves behind his siblings, many nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends,

some of whom were there by his side until the end.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie (Jimmy) Redmond of Lafayette; one sister, Elaine

(Gary) Duhon of Jennings; one brother, Harrell Chaisson of Jennings; five grandchildren: Ryan

Chaisson, Kaleb Chaisson, Tyler Chaisson, Jay Redmond, and Jordan Stevens; and four greatgrandchildren:

Addilyn, Makenzie, Piper, and Wren.

Mr. Chaisson is preceded in death by his parents, Eldridge and Rose Miller Chaisson; his wife,

Cheryl Foreman Chaisson; and his son, Christopher Chaisson.
