David Elliott Harper, M.D.

The family of David Elliott Harper, M.D., announces his passing from this life on September 29, 2026, at the age of 71, surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 12, 1955, in Crowley, LA, David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

David began his life as a gift - a present on his parents' 1st Anniversary. He continued to be a gift of love, laughter and "Yee Haws." for the next 71 years.

He earned his Eagle Scout and was awarded the Order of the Arrow by the Boy Scouts while attending New Iberia Senior High School. He also served as Drum Major there his senior year.

Four years, later David graduated from USL, currently UL, with a BS and then worked for the National Pancreatic Research Society while earning his Master's degree at UNO. He completed his education by achieving his life-long goal of becoming a medical doctor, earning his M.D. from LSU Medical School.

After completing his own medical residency, David helped begin an Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Earl K. Long Hospital in Baton Rouge, LA. Here he helped to educate, train and entertain more than 200 Emergency Medicine physicians. David served the Baton Rouge area as a caring, respected Emergency physician for 37 years, again proving to be a gift to so many in need. When he wasn't teaching doctors or saving lives, David loved to sing, garden and spend time with his family. David had an amazing singing voice and spent a number of years singing with the New Orleans Symphony Choir. David lived a full and happy life.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Missy Harper; three wonderful children: Lauren Camille Harper, Aniyah Harper and Andrew Harper. He was also a proud grandfather to Eden Harper. His sister, Melanie (Jan) Harper and his mother-in-law, Margie Benoit.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Claire Harper; his step-daughter, Hannah Broussard; and his father-in-law, Jimmy Benoit.

A gathering of family and friends will be held beginning at 9:30 AM at First Baptist Church of Welsh and continuing until the time of service at 12:00 PM, with Brother Pat Deshotel officiating. After the service, David will be laid to rest in Oaklawn Cemetery in Welsh.
