Barbara Ann Sockrider

Dec 31, 1935 — Aug 17, 2026

Barbara Sockrider, a lifelong resident of Roanoke, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 17, 2026, at the age of 90.

Barbara was born on December 31, 1935, to the late Delbert Lewis Duhon and the late Freida McMillan Duhon. She was a graduate of Roanoke High School and continued her education at McNeese State University, where she earned a master's degree in education.

Education was much more than a career for Barbara; it was a calling. She devoted 30 years to teaching in the public school system, touching the lives of countless students and families throughout her career. Even after retiring from public education, Barbara's love for teaching continued, and she spent several additional years teaching at OLI. Her dedication to education and to the young people she taught was an important part of her life and legacy.

Barbara was married to the love of her life, the late Richard Sockrider, for 57 years. Together, they built a life centered around family, faith, love, and their community.

A lifelong resident of Roanoke, Barbara cared deeply about the community she called home. She was an active member of the Lions Club, generously giving her time and energy in service to others. She was also a longtime member of Roanoke Methodist Church, where her faith and church family remained an important part of her life.

Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Richard Sockrider; her parents, Delbert Lewis Duhon and Freida McMillan Duhon; and her two brothers, Philip Lewis and Mickey Duhon.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Boyd Sockrider and his wife, Dana; her brother, Richard Duhon and his wife, Sandy; two grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, former students, fellow educators, and members of the Roanoke community whose lives she touched throughout her 90 years.

Barbara will be remembered for her many years of service as an educator, her devotion to her family, her commitment to her community, and the lasting influence she had on generations of students. Her classroom may have been where she taught her lessons, but her kindness, faith, dedication, and love for others were lessons she carried with her throughout her life.

A gathering of friends of family will be held on Friday August 21, 2026, from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM. Funeral services to honor her life will be held the same day in the Miguez Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 AM with Pastor Steven Bellard officiating her services. She will laid to rest next to her husband in Greenwood Cemetery in Jennings, LA.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the employees of St. Frances Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the kindness, love, and compassionate care shown to Barbara. The family also extends a heartfelt thank-you to the wonderful staff of Brighton Bridge Hospice for the comfort, dignity, and compassion they provided to Barbara and her family during her final days.

Barbara's life was one of service-to her family, her students, her church, and her community. Though she will be deeply missed, the lessons she taught, the love she gave, and the lives she touched will remain a lasting testament to a beautiful life well lived.
